Welcome to Bookpurnong, a little known area on the outskirts of Loxton. Located 8km out of Berri and 17km from Loxton, in the Riverland, South Australia.
The River Block is located on a beautiful lagoon called Ajax Achilles, upstream from Lock 4. Between the 1920s and 1930s, a series of navigable locks and weirs were built along the Murray River to make South Australia’s river highway permanently passable. They are safe for boats to pass through (with an appointment) but if you plan to kayak, you will need to navigate around them via land.
The River Block is said to be the location of the original Bookpurnong Post Office. In a time before locks, paddle steamers would deliver cargo via the water throughout the Riverland.
Down by the water on the old stump, above the wagon wheel you will see an old rusty nail, this nail marks the water level during the 1956 flood. This is just one of the many interesting things you can see on a walk around the property.
